Today I’m featuring ‘Doggy Fashion’ and Brighton is the perfect catwalk for our furry friends.
Joy Flowers created ‘Scrufts’ after disappointing trips to the pet shop. ‘What I saw in the shops saddened me’ explains Joy ‘no thought seemed to have gone into the process. I like to choose my colours and textures to compliment hounds’ coats and having a background in knitwear design, I find texture and colour truly exciting’.
Joy’s creations are handmade under the watchful eye of her own dogs, Maggie & Frankie. Each collar has a strong webbing core and is covered with American grosgrain ribbon or Kaffe Fasset fabric. They’re lined with velvet and completed with heart shaped tags. The leads are double sided with luxurious velvet lined grips and are available in three lengths.
Designs include cupcakes, floral ribbon and the colourful, stripy ‘Brighton Rocks’.
Joy was a child of the early 50s, brought up to ‘make do and mend’ and as such has always created. ‘I was a bit of a heffalump in the swinging 60s so had to make my own clothes as everyone was Twiggy shaped and I definitely wasn’t.’ says Joy. She set up her own company in the early 80s after having her son. ‘Jump for Joy’ specialized in hand knitted woollies for kids in unique designs. She had her own shop for a while until the last recession. ‘Ah, the memories!’ she quips. ‘Now my son is grown and my two dogs are the furry kids of the house…..’
