Into the woods is an exhibition of two Brighton based artists Daisy Jordan and Olivia Morgan. This show of drawings, paintings and photographs uses the idea of the forest as a point of departure, to represent the subconscious
Mind with clues to an underlying narrative. Both artists are informed and influenced by an interest in European folklore and fairy tale as well as from works of feminist prose and poetry.
Daisy Jordan uses beasts and animals in her work to represent symbolically various aspects of the psyche which are kept hidden. These could be the monsters which lurk under our beds; the protagonists of the subconscious imagination. The beasts are simultaneously innocent and sexual, both the victim and the predator. The mouth is a recurring motif, as well as other orifices which invite us to enter, arousing a tension between our longing to explore the unknown and our desire to stay within the comfort of the familiar.
Much of the work here illustrates an interest in the animal/human divide; that is, where our “civilised” human self begins and where our primal nature ends, or is repressed.
Olivia Morgan uses the landscape as
a visual metaphor for internal psychological states. She is interested the very human sense of drama that is attributed to the forest, in film, theatre, poetry and prose. What we see is defined by these collective cultural notions, and narrative associations. These ideas pervade the consciousness, feed our understanding and inform a greater sense of being.
Photography is an important part of her practice, by exploiting its deceptive qualities and continually manipulating the imagery, she renders the forms strange and disconnected from their origin.
