On the 17th of September, sponsored by fetish model Ms Poppy Cock, the Buttercream Bakery, H Bar and Goddamn Media, Brightonians and visitors alike will be beckoned towards the first and only fashion show of its kind.

Some of our cities best loved characters including the Countess of Brighton and Hackney (of Come Dine With Me Fame) and Peter Jarrette are involved in this creative afternoon of colour and design.
Designs are inspired by the unity and friendliness of Brighton and its unique spirit, some politically motivated referencing recent unrest and others inspired by the simple things in life like tea and cake.

The show will prove that fashion does not need to be costly.

The only rule of entry for exhibitors is that the design was made or styled or glued or stapled in the four week period before the event.

Awareness & Love All Nighters are the fun loving, political conscious, charity fundraising event troupe from London and once again they’re hitting Brighton hard with their eclectic style and mix of all things bouncy and rhythmic.

Coming to Hectors House on the August bank Holiday weekend. On Saturday 25th, you can expect to see 7 hours of some of the most up to date and exciting bands and DJs in one room shrouded by insane visuals and over the top silly games that will have you laughing and loving all night long. And what’s best is that its free entry from 6 to 9pm and only £4 after that!!!

On top of that they also throw a cracking after party at a secret location!

Expect dance music, expect visually pleasing decor, expect awesome face paints, expect silly-ness, expect pie fights for charity, expect true AV pioneering and most of all expect to have one of the best nights in Brighton this end of the summer!

We are just uploading and putting the finishing touches to the new and improved Brighton Collective Web site. Please bear with us as we slot everything into place!

The sculptures of Coachwerks artist-in-residence Josephine Dimbleby will be taking over the front area outside 19 Hollingdean Terrace for the duration of the May festival. Every day, you’ll find her scouring the streets, harvesting discarded rubbish from the pavements and roads to use in transforming her ‘human chrysalises’.

After a month of transmogrification inside the tape shells, the rebirth of a new creature is likely to occur conveniently during a performance at the final show on Tuesday 31^st May, 6pm-8pm. All are welcome to attend.

The month-long metamorphosis of the sculptures from simple shell to their elaborate conclusion will be captured on time-lapse video, which will be available to view on the Coachwerks website from the beginning of June.Â

Community workshops during May

Josephine is keen to teach others the simple techniques she uses to make her sculptures. (Please note – under-14s are welcome to join the workshops, but must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.)

Tape people workshop: Come along on Sunday 8^th May, 1-5pm to learn how to make your own tape person or object. Once we’ve made our tape sculptures, we’ll take them on a mini-tour, exploring how we can place them in the environment to make street art. All our masterpieces will be photographed for display on the Coachwerks website.

Chrysalis workshop: On Sunday 15^th May, 1-5pm, Josephine will be hosting a workshop to show you how to make a chrysalis for a creature of your own design – even better, she’ll show you how your chrysalis can be set to burst open of its own accord, releasing your bizarre little critter into the wilds several days later. Intrigued? Make sure to be there!

Memories seeped into the very essence of consciousness. Found in the most abstract of places, they provide us with a contextual framework for our own humanity, our very own subjective understanding of the world. But far from enduring, memory can evade us, blurring at the edges. Eventually all these afterimages dissipate, leaving little more than a faded reality.

Alex Priors understanding of memory, and the concept that it lingers in the very places we least expect it is what has led to his latest exhibition Parallel Horizons, debuting at the Artist Residence Hotel & Gallery (AR) on Saturday 5^th February 2011.

Alexs two month residency at AR followed a trip to New York, where he produced a series of work based on Coney Islands derelict and dilapidated funfair. During his residency, he has focused much of his work on the West Pier, drawing on similarities between the two locations. Both sites, once dominant, lively and loved now, stand isolated with nothing but memories haunting them, waltzing across the ballroom and shrieking on rides.

The end result is achingly beautiful, a series of mixed media images: photography, acrylic, charcoal, sculpture. A print of the West Piers skeleton will fade slowly during the month long exhibition, presenting the opportunity to revisit this extraordinary exhibition time and time again, observing its gradual demise, leaving nothing more than its own memory.

This is not one to be missed.

I am working with a wonderful voluntary run group called CompARTment to host a Christmas Arts Bazaar in the London Road Old Market, Brighton, this and next Saturday (11th and 18th), the market will run from 10-6pm. I am looking for local artists and crafters to get involved, stalls are only £10 per day. Next year will be a big year for The Brighton Collective as we start to organise our own Events with the Designers featured on the showcase site here.
