Human chrysalises and community workshops at Coachwerks

110410 marathon tapehand 004 225x300 Human chrysalises and community workshops at CoachwerksThe sculptures of Coachwerks artist-in-residence Josephine Dimbleby will be taking over the front area outside 19 Hollingdean Terrace for the duration of the May festival. Every day, you’ll find her scouring the streets, harvesting discarded rubbish from the pavements and roads to use in transforming her ‘human chrysalises’.

After a month of transmogrification inside the tape shells, the rebirth of a new creature is likely to occur conveniently during a performance at the final show on Tuesday 31st May, 6pm-8pm. All are welcome to attend.

The month-long metamorphosis of the sculptures from simple shell to their elaborate conclusion will be captured on time-lapse video, which will be available to view on the Coachwerks website from the beginning of June.

Community workshops during May

Josephine is keen to teach others the simple techniques she uses to make her sculptures. (Please note – under-14s are welcome to join the workshops, but must be accompanied and supervised by an adult.)

Tape people workshop: Come along on Sunday 8th May, 1-5pm to learn how to make your own tape person or object. Once we’ve made our tape sculptures, we’ll take them on a mini-tour, exploring how we can place them in the environment to make street art. All our masterpieces will be photographed for display on the Coachwerks website.

Suggested donation: £3

Chrysalis workshop: On Sunday 15th May, 1-5pm, Josephine will be hosting a workshop to show you how to make a chrysalis for a creature of your own design – even better, she’ll show you how your chrysalis can be set to burst open of its own accord, releasing your bizarre little critter into the wilds several days later. Intrigued? Make sure to be there!

Suggested donation: £3

Josephine Dimbleby is a Brighton based artist who works with junk and biodegradable materials to create both inhabited and uninhabited suits. For upcoming performance dates or more details about her work, see her website and blog at www.josephinedimbleby.com

Daring decadence… Choccywoccydoodah

Luxury and decadence can come in many forms, from the pristine white of lead crystal and linen sheets to the opulence and colour saturation of jewels and tropical flowers. Of course, each person’s ideal of decadence will vary from the next, but I think that most will agree that the craft and deliciousness of the artisan chocolate falls lushly into this category. And at this springy time of the year, what could be better than combining the two – true decadence of the eyes and the taste buds.

Choccywoccydoodah in Duke Street, Brighton solidifies my own ideas of decadence in a way which borders on Continue reading

Annett Bank- Fluid, flamboyant femininity.

I was drawn like a moth to the flame by the powerful, colourful and spiritual oil paintings by Brighton artist Annett Bank. They are awe-inspiring and joyful expressions of the female form, a celebration of the body and movement. The life force within her artwork is so compelling, it is as though the graceful forms on the canvas are literally dancing and leaping before your very eyes.

Annett’s motto is ‘to make the world a better place, by making oneself a better space…’ Her striking paintings have the ability to Continue reading

Creative Events by Doily Days

Okay, so I write for the blog in a totally separate capacity but this is an unashamed plug for my event business Doily Days! John (head honcho) suggested it and who am I to turn down free publicity? Especially at this time of year when the evenings are getting lighter, the daffodils are ready to pop open and we’re all looking forward and planning for the summer – cakes piled high at garden parties, champagne glimmering in the sunshine at weddings. Hmmmmm…

Doily Days is a vintage/country garden event business. We provide the following services:

  • Vintage china Hire
  • Country cottage flowers
  • Catering i.e. afternoon teas, hog roasts, BBQ’s
  • VW Campervan hire for weddings, proms etc
  • Wedding favors – 4oz jars of old fashioned sweets, jams and chutneys (personalised and topped with mismatching fabric)

You’ll also find recommended marquees on the website – The English Tea Tent and The Cornish Cream Tent. Two marquees that we love and are perfect for Doily Days weddings.

I like to call myself ‘Creative Director & Event Stylist’. I have a real passion for vintage and retro, I enjoy creating the wow factor for relaxed events… and I really love cake! The business has evolved since I set it up in 2009 and has taken on a life of its own. Friends often refer to things – cafe’s, furniture etc – as ‘very Doily Days’ and it makes me feel very happy and proud.

I regularly update the facebook page with pictures from events, links I see and love and exciting news from the Doily Days world. ‘Like’ the page here http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Doily-Days/129453690398292

Artwork & Textiles by Angela Chick

I really like the simple paragraph on Angela Chicks homepage. I think it sums up her dreamy, creative style nicely:

My name is Angela and I like to do drawings, sometimes I sew things as well, yeah that’s right. Usually when I do drawings I try not to look. I like surprises. Nice surprises.

I cant remember now how I found out about Angela but, interestingly, she is one of the founders of the Handmade Co-operative shop on St James Street. I featured fellow Continue reading

Ive seen his photos on display in local cafes, at Ropetackle, the new arts centre and have been kept informed of his exhibitions and open houses (although embarrassingly I havent been to any sorry Kev! New Years resolutions and all that). I am always impressed with his passion and drive for photography and fell in love with his amazing picture of Ipanema Beach in the shadow of Two Brothers Mountain. The lighting is just beautiful. Kevins photography business is called Images Everything (www.images-everything.co.uk). He does wedding and commercial photography and sells his incredible Continue reading

Artist Residence Hotel & Gallery

Memories seeped into the very essence of consciousness. Found in the most abstract of places, they provide us with a contextual framework for our own humanity, our very own subjective understanding of the world. But far from enduring, memory can evade us, blurring at the edges. Eventually all these afterimages dissipate, leaving little more than a faded reality.

Alex Priors understanding of memory, and the concept that it lingers in the very places we least expect it is what has led to his latest exhibition Parallel Horizons, debuting at the Artist Residence Hotel & Gallery (AR) on Saturday 5th February 2011.

Alexs two month residency at AR followed a trip to Continue reading

AfterWARD. Recycled Clothing & Accessories by Wendy Ward

When I research designers for The Brighton Collective blog I’m always intrigued to find out about their inspiration, background and how they’ve got to where they are today.

I came across afterWARD by Wendy Ward, a growing collection of clothing and accessories made from recycled clothes and textiles, and I delved a little deeper to find out more about the products and the designer’s background.

Wendy’s collection consists of neck ruffles and capelets (decorated with laser cutting and hand embroidery), neck pieces (made from fragments of fabrics) and tops and dresses made from Continue reading

Cushions to make your Granny proud! By Paisley Fox

When I was younger I remember we had an absolutely hideous sofa in our lounge – it was green and brown, flowery and swirly and I remember being acutely embarrassed when my friends came over to play. Looking back I think it was Sanderson fabric and bang on trend for the 80’s! Fair play to my stylish mother…

Paisley Fox aka Helen Price from Brighton collects and cherishes vintage fabric and turns them into stylish, unique cushions for the home.

She works for Jo Franks at Love Frankie in Kemptown (featured on the blog January 2010 http://www.thebrightoncollective.co.uk/blog/2010/01/you-gotta-love-frankie/) where she sells the Continue reading

Asian Kitschology – The Dumpling Dynasty Brand

When I came across the Wu & Wu website I know I liked it. I liked it because it was kitsch. Hello Kitty Kitsch.

Fiona Hewitt is the illustrator and describes herself as “Brand Creatrice and expert in Asian Kitschology”. What a title! “My illustrations are inspired by years spent living in Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong, endlessly trawling the flea markets and junk shops for inspiration” explains Fiona.

Wu & Wu is primarily concerned with creating unique, fun products to make your home a Continue reading

The Sunday before christmas the downstairs at Komedia was taken over with crafty types people selling their handmade wares along with second-hand clothes and bits and bobs.

The Brighton Collective were there, networking as usual, spreading the word and encouraging designers to get on board. There were also four Brighton Collective designers myself, Helen, chief vintage cake stand maker and Brighton Collective roving reporter. Then there was Tess Robinson-Lane, it was a pleasure to meet her as I wrote an article about her for the blog back in June. She was selling her quirky Continue reading

Imyme album coverRose OGallivan 150x150 Stunning new Album from a local musician Imyme: Cue the Pyrotechnics.

Imyme: Cue the Pyrotechnics.
Sometimes you come across something that you love and enjoy so much that you feel you need to share it with the world. Luckily for me I have the ‘Brighton Collective’ to do this.

I came across this album through a group of friends, that I have actually known for a very long time and we go way back. It was this group of friends that have worked on this album and created it and the mastermind behind the whole project was Joe Isherwood.

This album is so beautifully produced and the level of Continue reading
