This is a call for expressions of interest from artists and designers in the UK for a residency programme based at Headspace studio and art gallery in Nara, Japan. Headspace is the beautiful brainchild of two Brits: Brighton and RCA-trained digital artist Jamie Goodenough and linguist-musician-artist-whatever Lee Walton.

The month-long residency is funded in part by the Daiwa Foundation and will be packed with opportunities to experience Japanese culture on many levels. Along with exhibiting in both the Headspace studio and other venues, the residency artists will be able to tap into the rich underground arts and music scene of the area, collaborate with local Japanese artists and get involved with other HeadSpace events and festivals. The programme aims to provide a ‘blank canvas’ for artists and designers to react to their experience of Japan by whatever means necessary!

The busy yet relaxed Headspace studio was inaugurated in 2009 and is a flexible working space that provides both opportunity for engagement and a venue for some serious work. It’s variously the home of Jamie’s design company, Headfull Productions; the events space for Lee’s bar, MR.Q; a gallery and events space as well as the location for the artists’ residency programme.

Jamie and Lee are not only focused on creating a ‘scene’ outside the well-stomped international art grounds of Osaka and Tokyo, but also bringing in artists and designers of all disciplines from the UK to make work in response to Japanese culture and fertilise some interesting cross-cultural collaborations.

Set up earlier in 2010, the residency programme has already enjoyed the madcap stay of visionary painter and illustrator David Shillinglaw and the junk suit antics of Josephine Dimbleby (erm, me…) and will shortly be hosting sculptor Ellie Doney, whose graduation show from the RCA Ceramics and Glass course in May left witnesses drooling.

As most of you know, we The Brighton Collective have been busy working behind the scenes to create a website for Brighton based designers to showcase their wonderful unique creations. Well i am pleased to say we are putting the finishing touches to the website as we speak and will be announcing our grand opening any time now so watch this space for an update!

We have a Collective of brilliant local designers all ready for the launch but there is plenty of room for more. We would love to hear from more of you to really get this project off to a flying start.

Our grand plan is to help promote your creativity by hosting meet ups, networking sessions and fairs and events where you can promote and sell your ideas and products.

Hi folks, the blog has been quiet over the last week as we put together the finishing touches to the new website, its going to be great! We are still looking for a few more designers to help us launch. SO if you would like us to promote your products get in touch quickly before the promotion time runs out. What is 100 sqft

An opportunity for artists to exhibit their work – no matter what their background alongside established artists and designers!

Whats the concept.

100 pieces of art each 1 foot square to be exhibited in a 10×10 grid at a gallery in North London. The layout will be displayed on the website – you simply book a square pay the 25 pound entry fee and send a 1000 pixel square image of your work by email – as soon as we receive the image we put it on the website. This means if you want to you can react to other artists work by placing your work alongside. Then when all squares are booked we take all the original pieces of work and display them in a gallery.
